Yokai and Legends
This page is dedicated to briefly overviewing some of the gods and mythical creatures that appear in the Kota Franklin series. These entries will be updated monthly with new kami, yokai, and local/urban legends that appear throughout the books. Kitsune
A spirit fox able to change its form, Kitsune are arguably the most well-known and popular yokai species. Taking up roles as tricksters, guardians, villains, and even kami in their own right, these creatures use their abilities in a variety of ways, holding a special place in the imagination of both Japanese and even global enthusists of Shinto lore.
A type of weasel who can cause massive, slicing whirlwinds that can leave cuts on unwary travelers.
Kami
Umibozu
A broad term that mostly describes the numerous deities within Shintoism. The worship and importance of each kami is highly dependent on the locations and communities throughout Japan, though several, especially Amaterasu the sun godess, are universally revered.
A terrifying sea creature often depicted as a towering black figure rising from the ocean. It is known to drag unwary ships into the depths, never to be seen again.
